Exploring Hot‑Dip Galvanizing and Corrosion Protection in Okinawa’s Coastal Environment

🟦 Host Facility: Takunan Factory Co., Ltd.

🟩 Industry Focus: Hot‑Dip Galvanizing & Corrosion Protection🟨 Location: Nakagusuku Village, Okinawa, Japan

🔴 Facility Overview – Takunan Factory Co., Ltd.

Takunan Factory Co., Ltd. is Okinawa’s only full‑scale hot‑dip galvanizing operation and a cornerstone of the island’s construction and infrastructure industry. Founded in 1972, the company has grown into a multi‑division manufacturer supporting steel structures, reinforcing steel, forming products, and corrosion protection for public infrastructure, commercial development, industrial facilities, and agricultural applications across Okinawa.

Operating in one of the world’s most corrosive environments—characterized by salt air, high humidity, and elevated temperatures—Takunan plays a critical role in extending the service life and reliability of steel structures throughout the region.

🔧 Featured Process: Hot‑Dip Galvanizing

The site visit provided members with a behind‑the‑scenes look at Takunan’s hot‑dip galvanizing operations, including observation of live production from the galvanizing control room.

• Steel components are carefully prepared through inspection and surface treatment

• Materials are immersed into molten zinc, forming a metallurgical bond to the steel

• The resulting zinc coating provides long‑term corrosion resistance and sacrificial protection

• Coated steel components are used in bridges, buildings, railings, ports, roads, agricultural facilities, and U.S. military installations

Takunan’s large immersion tanks allow for galvanizing long and complex steel assemblies that cannot be handled by smaller facilities.

🧭 Site Visit Format

• Welcome briefing covering Takunan’s history, operations, and role in Okinawa’s infrastructure• Guided observation from the control room overlooking the zinc bath• Live explanation of galvanizing operations, process controls, and coordination• Open discussion and Q&A with Takunan technical staff

This format allowed participants to connect design specifications and material selection with real‑world manufacturing and lifecycle performance.

🛑 Quality, Safety & Standards

Throughout the visit, Takunan emphasized a strong commitment to quality control and workplace safety:

• Incoming material inspections

• Surface preparation and process verification

• Coating thickness testing and visual inspection

• Compliance with applicable JIS standards

• Clear workflows, marked pathways, overhead crane coordination, and centralized controls

These practices demonstrated how heavy industrial operations can be conducted efficiently while maintaining a disciplined safety culture.

👥 Professional Value & Industry Insight

The site visit allowed SAME Japan members to translate theoretical corrosion principles into tangible, real‑world applications. Participants gained valuable insight into how galvanizing decisions affect lifecycle durability, maintenance planning, and long‑term infrastructure resilience—especially in coastal and high‑corrosion environments.

🟢 Why Site Visits Matter

This Takunan visit exemplified SAME Japan’s mission to connect industry, government, and engineering professionals through hands‑on engagement. For emerging professionals, it provided critical exposure to industrial operations rarely seen up close. For experienced members, it reinforced the importance of materials science and manufacturing excellence in delivering durable infrastructure.

SAME Japan extends its sincere thanks to Takunan Factory Co., Ltd. for their hospitality, openness, and technical insight, and looks forward to future opportunities that strengthen collaboration across the engineering and construction community.
